What is an intensive driving course?

An intensive driving course, sometimes called a crash course, compresses the hours of driving tuition you would normally spread across weeks or months into consecutive daily sessions, typically lasting from three to ten days. At the end of the course, you sit your practical driving test.

Intensive courses suit people who need to pass quickly for work reasons, are relocating and need a licence before moving, or simply prefer an immersive learning environment to the slower pace of weekly lessons. Research suggests that concentrated learning can be equally effective for many learners compared to spaced-out weekly lessons.

Your practical test at the end of the course is the standard DVSA driving test. It is identical to the test taken by learners who have had weekly lessons. There is no easier version of the test for intensive learners.

Types of intensive driving course

Intensive courses come in different formats. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right one.

Most flexible

Crash course (no test)

Tuition only. You arrange and pay for your test separately. Usually cheaper upfront but remember to book the test well in advance as slots fill quickly.

Most popular

Course with test included

The instructor books your theory and practical test as part of the package. More convenient, often better value if slots are available when you need them.

All the benefits of an intensive course in an automatic car. Ideal for learners who want to pass quickly without managing clutch and gear changes.

What you need before starting an intensive course

📝

Provisional driving licence

You must hold a valid provisional driving licence before you can take lessons. Apply through the DVLA website. Allow at least one to two weeks for it to arrive.

🧠

Theory test certificate

You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical test. Theory test results are valid for two years. Book this well in advance as test slots fill up. Revise using the official DVSA revision app.

👓

Glasses or contact lenses

If you need vision correction, you must wear them for every lesson and test. The examiner will check you can read a number plate at 20 metres before the test begins.

💳

Payment ready

Most instructors require full payment or a deposit upfront when booking an intensive course. Check cancellation and rescheduling policies before paying.

Frequently asked questions about intensive driving courses

Research on this is mixed. Intensive courses can be very effective for motivated learners who are able to absorb and retain information quickly. The immersive nature suits some people well. Others find that weekly lessons with time to practise mentally between sessions work better for long-term skill retention.

You can book and pay for a further test. Many instructors offer a top-up package of additional hours to help you prepare for a resit. Ask about this before booking your course so you know the cost upfront.

You must pass the theory test before you can take a practical driving test, so yes. If you have not yet taken your theory test, book it as soon as possible since slots can be several weeks away.
