Passing your driving test is just the beginning. Pass Plus and motorway lessons help newly qualified drivers tackle the situations not covered in standard lessons. Find DVSA-approved instructors near you.
Pass Plus is a practical training course developed by the DVSA specifically for newly qualified drivers. It consists of at least 6 hours of training across six modules that cover situations rarely or never encountered during standard lessons.
Busy urban roads, pedestrian zones, one-way systems
Country lanes, bends, junctions without road markings
Higher speeds, overtaking, lane discipline
Joining, leaving, smart motorways, lane discipline at high speed
Rain, fog, ice, sun glare and how conditions affect stopping distances
Headlight use, reduced visibility, driving in darkness
Pass Plus courses typically cost £150 to £250 for the minimum 6 hours. The price is set by the individual instructor, not the DVSA. Some insurers offer a discount on premiums for newly qualified drivers who complete Pass Plus, though you should confirm the saving with your insurer before booking as discounts vary considerably.
Learner drivers in the UK have been able to drive on motorways with an approved instructor since 2018. Many newly qualified drivers lack confidence on motorways because motorway driving was not available to most learners before this change, and the standard test does not include motorway driving.
A dedicated motorway lesson with an experienced instructor covers joining and leaving motorways correctly, lane discipline, overtaking safely, managing speed, smart motorway rules and what to do if something goes wrong on the motorway.
Pass Plus is a 6-hour post-test training scheme covering motorways, rural roads, night driving and bad weather driving. It is worth doing if you want to build confidence quickly after passing, particularly if you know you will be driving in conditions not covered during your lessons. Whether the insurance discount makes it financially worthwhile depends on your insurer.
Yes. Once you have passed your driving test, you can drive on the motorway unsupervised with a full licence. Motorway driving lessons with an instructor before going solo are strongly recommended if you have no motorway experience.
Pass Plus is designed for new drivers but there is no time limit on when you can take it. It is most beneficial in the first year after passing when you are building driving experience. Some instructors also offer similar post-test training outside the formal Pass Plus scheme.
Some insurers offer discounts for Pass Plus completion, typically 5 to 15 per cent. The availability and size of discounts have decreased in recent years. Contact your insurer before booking to confirm whether they offer a discount and how much it is worth compared to the cost of the course.
